What is 404 Error?

The 404 error message is a very popular website error message that states that the webpage you are searching for cannot be reached, cannot be found, or does not exist.

This also occurs when a user clicks on an old (or “broken”) connection, or when a URL is mistyped in a web browser’s address area.

Any websites view custom 404 error pages that appear very similar to other pages on the same site. Other websites simply view the web server’s default error message text, which usually begins with “Not Found.”

Appearance of a 404 error, indicates that the server is operating and operating at the same time as the website or the url or path of that webpage is invalid.

Now the question arises why then it is called a “404 error” and not just a “Missing Webpage Error?”

The answer is that 404 is an error code that is generated by the web server when it cannot find the webpage it is searching for.

This error code is well known by search engines, allowing their crawlers to avoid indexing such bad URLs.

Web scripts and website debugging software can quickly read 404 errors, allowing webmasters to detect and patch broken connections at the same time.

Other typical web server codes include 200, which indicates that a searched website has been identified. The second is 301, which indicates that a file has been relocated to a different site. These status messages, including 404 errors, are not visible to users, but they are used by search engines and website monitoring software.
